Canberra began life as a dry town. Under an ordinance proposed by King O'Malley, no new liquor licences could be granted in the federal territory from late 1910, so thirsty workers headed across the border to Queanbeyan's pubs or drove back with a car full of grog. A plebiscite in September 1928 lifted the ban, and Hotel Canberra received its licence that December. The Old Canberra Inn at Lyneham is older than the city itself: a slab hut built in 1857 and licensed as a coaching inn in 1876.
