Sydney's pub story starts in The Rocks, where three old hotels have rival claims to be the city's oldest. The Fortune of War's licence goes back to the late 1820s, though today's building is from the 1920s; the Lord Nelson has been licensed since 1841; and the Hero of Waterloo was built in 1844. Six o'clock closing ran from 1916 until a 1954 referendum narrowly chose 10 pm. On the Mid North Coast, the Taylors Arm pub is tied to Slim Dusty's 1957 hit "A Pub with No Beer".
