Queensland's beer has a Brisbane address. The Milton brewery opened in 1878, the XXXX name followed in 1924, and its neon signs are now part of the heritage-listed site. Many of the state's classic country hotels are timber, wrapped in deep verandahs suited to the subtropical heat. Out west, the sandstone Birdsville Hotel has stood since about 1884, while in Ingham, Dan Sheahan wrote "A Pub Without Beer" in 1943 after American soldiers drank the Day Dawn Hotel dry. Locals call a 285 ml glass a pot.
