Western Australia took its own line on licensing, settling on 9 pm closing in 1917 while most states shut their bars at six. Perth's brewing roots reach back to the Albion Brewery of 1837, and the riverside Old Swan Brewery buildings below Mount Eliza remain a landmark. Guildford's Rose and Crown has poured drinks since 1841, and Kalgoorlie's verandahed goldfields hotels were crucial to social life on the diggings. In 1984, Fremantle's Sail and Anchor became Australia's first modern brewpub. Here a 285 ml glass is a middy.
